Bugs Control
Source: INTA, EEA Oliveros

Considering the south region of Santa Fe, the population of detrimental insects that developed in the aerial part of the say crops has been relatively low lately. We have had "poor attacks" from the "measuring caterpillar", isolated lots with "Tardey Militar", presence of "Sprout Digger", in late crops and in very specific sectors.
This scene is being repeated during this agricultural cycle. The "measuring caterpillar" is gone, "anticarsia" had a peak relatively low from Rosario to the north. The "Barrenador del brote" has not been detected yet and the "chinches" are present but with very low activity.

Supposing that some crops in the region could require insecticide treatment due to "bugs", we would want to make a few considerations about it:

  • Crops with high possibilities of having "bugs" are not the ones that were planted earliest. These, due to their state of development, with big seeds that surpass the Maximum Size stage, could reach harvest with no treatment at all. During the last seasons, the number of "bugs" reached a treatment level in late sowed crops.

  • Lots of crops, first occupation as well as second occupation, usually are sowed later than the usual so they have a distance between lines that is less than 70cm (about 52 or 53cm). In these crops is necessary to adjust the application to that distance.

For those who take advantage of the benefits of insecticide treatment, is necessary that they use a method according to their cultivation system. The direct sowing over any stubble and the minors spaces require the use of the "Vertical Cloth" as a way to count the insects in the aerial area.

Even though insecticide treatments for plants that are 52 to 53 cm apart are adjustments made with direct information (dynamic population of the insects and number of yield/m2), they are applicable and have a margin above what is tolerable in theory.

It has to be kept in mind that the bigger nymphs are those that have more than 5mm in length.
